Had a good sea trial last Thursday. We ran the boat up to cruising speed about 9.2 knts at 1500rpm and went a bit beyond that to make sure things would hold together. The engine smoked a bit at first, but soon cleared up. I got to practice backing the Pike and docked the boat. Everything seems great.
It's been rainy today and last week and painting has been on hold. I've painted some vertical surfaces and hatch openings with success. Today I went to Hamilton's and picked up some supplies including a toilet seat that fixes to a 5 gallon bucket. Simple is good and I don't want to fuss with any moving parts in a portable toilet. So I've scraped back the peeling paint in the fwd cabin and generally made the place clean enough to function as a head. There's plenty of room. I'll cleat off the bucket and provide a spare full of cedar shavings. Just like our outhouse at home.
Friday we're taking the Pike for another trial of sorts on which we'll scatter the ashes of Luke Allen who started and ran Rockport Marine before Taylor. Then later in the weekend we'll go to a mooring in Benjamin River. I had hoped we could find a dock to be at, Maine Maritime would have been perfect, but they're full. So I'll get to do some rowing, and be closer to home.
I painted the boom today and did some doors with Kirby semi-gloss white and a slightly darker gray than the most recent gray coat. I'd seen a picture of the Pauline with the darker gray and liked it. Things are coming together, but it's going to have to be a big week.
